“The prettiest, if not the most romantic town in Scotland,” was how Sir
Walter Scott described Kelso.
It’s easy to see why the bard of the Borders fell in love with this
settlement. Its situation on the banks of the Tweed and Teviot rivers,
beautiful stone buildings and intimate lanes and passageways give it a
unique character. The charm of the cobbled central square, dominated by the
Town Hall, highlights Kelso’s historic importance as a marketplace and focus
for commerce, much of it relating to agriculture.
The imposing 12th century abbey towers above a compact town with many fine
examples of townhouse architecture. Shops, cafes and restaurants add a touch
of modernity to the Victorian and Georgian buildings. A short walk from the
town centre is Shedden Park, a recreational space used regularly by cricket
and hockey teams. Nearby Poynder Park is the home of the town’s celebrated
rugby team and, on Kelso’s northern edge, is the famous racecourse, golf
course and Floors Castle.
Kelso is a convenient staging point for exploring the rest of the Borders
and beyond. Visit today and spark a new romance to rival Sir Walter’s.
